Valentine Poutine

I was on the Facebook fan page of TPoutine the other day and noticed their Valentine's Day poutine. I wrote them about it and got a nice note back saying, "...it's unfortunately not something we can offer our diners though (it's too time consuming and messing with the curds in advance would ruin their freshness). I credit our chef, Kathleen Lucier, for her handy skills." I decided to take a page from T-Poutine and try it myself.

I started with a block of mild cheddar. I figured it'd be too hard to mess with trying to make curds into heart shapes.

Luckily I had a set of heart-shaped cookie cutters...

...which I used to cut the hearts.

I just kept going till I had about eight little cheesy hearts.

I used potato wedges instead of fries and poured chicken gravy on top of the lot.

It wasn't half bad. I missed the squeaky cheese curds but for a Valentine's Day treat, it was kinda fun.

It was not only aesthetically pleasing, it was DELICIOUS. I loved the potato wedges. Five curds out of five!

Are the potatoes crisp? Do you fry them or bake them? I want to try making this at home!

Genny, usually you do poutine with French fries... I'm not sure how ROnna did these taters but they were awfully good!!! Baked?

Awesome! Did you know there is an article about poutine in Jan/Feb 2010 Cooking Light?

I have never seen a poutine look so love-ely....

How does the cheddar stack up against chewy curds?

Genny: The so-called fries were potato wedges, rolled in veggie oil and a bit of s & p and baked hot (400F) for an hour, turning once or twice till crisp on the outside and soft on the inside.
Elisabeth: I actually missed the squeaky cheddar curd feel but I loved the visual effect of the hearts.
And anonymous: yes, my sis is mailing me the article and I will post it here soon.

How many curds do you give yourself?

How womantic.

Jack, I was disappointed...the gravy was not poutine sauce but I thought I'd try hot chicken gravy from St. Hubert. I found it too runny and salty. And no curds? I know the hearts were cute but not as tasty as real curds. And the wedges weren't as crisp as I'd have liked. Maybe a 3 out of 5. Gets a point for cuteness though.

I dunno, I ate three helpings. I thought it was pretty darn tasty, and I excused the lack of curds because the cheese hearts were adorable!
